When you think ‘safari’  and ‘South Africa’  you probably think ‘Kruger’. Or one of the bigger reserves in the north of the country. What a lot of people don’t know (and that is great – let’s keep it like that!) is that there are so many beautiful wildlife areas in the KwaZulu-Natal province, one of them being the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park. Easy to combine with some beach time in Durban or with an active hike in the Drakensberg, this area is know for its abundance of wildlife and lack of tourists.

There are many amazing self catering options in and around the park and of course we help you to choose the best one for your holiday. We can even help you draft the shopping list so you arrive well prepared and ready to go on your safari!

The park is home to Africa’s big five and many more animals. It’s one of the worlds top spots for viewing nyala and a prime birding destination.

There are many other options in KwaZulu-Natal, for all different budgets. One of our top-favorites is Phinda Private Game Reserve, definitely much more expensive than the self-catering option but worth every penny!

Phinda Private Game Reserve is perfectly situated in the lush Zululand, between Mkuze Game Reserve and the iSimangaliso Wetland Park (St. Lucia Wetland Park). Because if it’s phenomenal location, you traverse through seven distinct habitats or eco-systems sheltering an abundance of wildlife, including Africa’s Big Five. If you want something different during your stay, you can easily head to the nearby coast of Sodwana – said to be the rival of the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Watch turtles hatch or go fishing….

There are different options if you want to stay at Phinda. Phinda Mountain Lodge is the largest of the lot, and perfectly suitable for families. Rates go from ZAR 7.875,- per person per night. Phinda Vlei is one of our favourites, with only six rooms it’s very exclusive and private. And it has just had a massive refurbishment…. Rates go from ZAR 9.845,- per person per night. Forest Lodge is our other favourite. Tucked away in the lush forest, you might encounter some curious monkeys on your veranda. Rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated. Rates go from ZAR 8.565,- per person per night. The Phinda Rock Lodge is offering spectaculair views from your own private deck and here as well; with just six rooms a very private and exclusive experience. Rates from ZAR 9.845,- per person per night. Phinda Zuka and Phinda Homestead (will reopen in september 2018) are the perfect hideaways when you are traveling with a family or a group of friends. No other guests; your own butler, chef, guide and tracker…. the ultimate safari!
